The Newnan Male Academy Museum was initially established as a private boys’ school (male seminary) back in the 1880s until it was later realized by Mrs. Shapiro in its long-vacant and deteriorating form.
The museum features popular exhibits like:

- The Smith Collection
- The Judge Byron Mathews
- Back Vestibule
- The Alan Jackson Collection
The Front Vestibule consists of a showcase of some really old Indian artifacts, as well as the history of the Male Academy on the wall.
On the other hand, the story of the Smith Collection can be dated back to December 6, 1821, when Ellen Peniston got married to Dr. Ira Ellis Smith in Petersburg, Virginia.
The couples later departed the place in a covered wagon where they arrived in the city of Newnan in 1828.
Thus, the Smith Collection features a display of the Cherry Hunt board (or Slideboard), the famous Poster Bed with its very beautiful and elegant acanthus design, and lots more.
There is a lot to learn in the museum.
In fact, one of my favorite collections here is the I.E.C.W Smith’s decorative arts, and the actual Civil War battle flag that was later reformed and framed.

It all started at Houston Sprayberry’s gas station on 29 Highway Street, just north of downtown Newnan.
Sprayberry’s Barbeque has seen the likes of so many former United States presidents and governors who steadily come here to campaign.
In fact, the popular country music star, Alan Jackson used to wait tables here during high school days. Even as he became famous, nothing could stop him from coming by to have his regular Brunswick stew and lemon pie.
